The success of children at school is often determined by their origin, education and income of their parents, and as a result, inequality of opportunity starts at an early age. Where the schools only want to eliminate disadvantages, BIJ1 wants to tackle this inequality at the root. We want to do this by fighting under-advice and the role of racism, classism and ableism in education. Equal opportunities are created by investing in the schools and students who need it most. Every child deserves an accessible, healthy and safe learning environment where they feel welcome and can develop their talents, regardless of skin colour, gender, neurodivergence, religion or social class.

In the past decades, market forces have destroyed Dutch healthcare. Long waiting times, fragmented youth care facilities, inadequate care from the Social Support Act (Wmo) - all this care is inaccessible for many people. In 2015, care provision in the Netherlands was further decentralised and municipalities were given a larger role. Under the guise of 'customisation', far-reaching cuts were justified. In practice, this caused fragmented care provision, less quality control, and especially more room for market forces. This must change radically.

The consequences of the climate crisis are becoming increasingly visible and serious. Thanks to BIJ1, Amsterdam was the first city in the Netherlands to declare the climate crisis in 2019, but unfortunately, this has not yet led to effective policy; Amsterdam is behind on its own goals. Big companies buy up land, continue to colonise, and are not being held accountable.

Low wages, insecurity, and a poor work-life balance: that’s the result of our neo-liberal economy. It is also the order of the day in our municipality. BIJ1 fights against all forms of exploitation and speaks out for fair pay, social security, and a safe working environment. We, therefore, do everything in our power to raise the wages in our town considerably. In addition, the use of flexible and temporary contracts must be discouraged. Social security also means protection against racism, ableism, and other forms of discrimination in the workplace.

The fact that capitalism is an unjust system is most apparent in Amsterdam’s housing. Hundreds of thousands of people have been on waiting lists for years, and rents and house prices are skyrocketing. The number of homeless people in Amsterdam has also doubled in ten years' time. People with small to medium-sized budgets are increasingly denied their right to the city. The current municipal policy is classist, racist and undemocratic. Amsterdam belongs to all Amsterdammers.

Recently, Amsterdam has taken its first deliberate steps towards decolonisation, such as the mayor apologising in 2021 for the city’s past connections to the slave trade. However, BIJ1 recognises discrimination is still a problem in Amsterdam. Police still racially profile, intimidate and endanger people of colour. Recently, the police gained even more power to use violence without independent oversight. Amsterdam's gentrification policies also drive away families and households that cannot pay the top price for their homes, and this is a problem that disproportionately hits vulnerable families, specifically families of colour.

We hebben weer een nieuwe term, de zevenvinkers, bedacht door Joris Luyendijk. Zevenvinkers zijn de mensen die de wind meehebben door zeven voorrechten: ze hebben ouders die welgesteld zijn of hebben gestudeerd, die in Nederland zijn geboren, ze zijn man, wit en hetero, ze hebben gymnasium of vwo gedaan, ze zijn afgestudeerd aan de universiteit. Dat is in Nederland een heel kleine groep, 3% van de bevolking, maar het is ook een groep die onevenredig vaak de baas is, en de beste posities inneemt, overal waar het gaat om macht. In de politiek, in het bedrijfsleven, in de media, overal in de top zitten meestal de zevenvinkers.

De media in Nederland staat niet bekend om hun vriendelijke verslaggeving als het aankomt op gender onderdrukte mensen. Jegens trans mannen, non-binaire mensen en mensen met een culturele gender identiteit uit zich dit doorgaans in transfobie in de vorm van o.a. onbegrip en uitwissing. Tegenover trans vrouwen uit zich dit echter doorgaans op een hele andere wijze: onversneden transhaat.

Ook Gemeente Amsterdam houdt zich bezig met fraudejacht op burgers, via handhaving van de Participatiewet. Wie de ingewikkelde regels en procedures van de Participatiewet niet begrijpt, loopt het risico om per ongeluk een fout te maken en daardoor als fraudeur bestempeld te worden.

Mobiliteitsarmoede is een onrecht waardoor mensen de kans op een normaal bestaan ontnomen wordt, en dat moét anders. Daarom dienden we als fractie het initiatiefwetsvoorstel Gratis OV in, geschreven door fractiemedewerker Nilab Ahmadi met Jelle de Graaf, en ingediend door Jazie Veldhuyzen.

Onze lijsttrekker en fractievoorzitter Jazie Veldhuyzen is genomineerd voor beste raadslid van Nederland vanwege zijn onvermoeibare inzet voor Amsterdam, en de grote positieve invloed die hij met slechts één zetel in de raad heeft gehad.
